Terry and Vicki Winn National Carer Portrait Series

Hawkes Bay Photographer Terry Winn and his wife Vicki spent a year travelling around New Zealand, photographing New Zealand carers and those they support.  The result : More than 40  images featured in the recently featured  Caring Moments' portrait exhibition at the Hastings Art Gallery (formerly the Hawkes Bay Exhibition Centre).  Family Care Radio asked Terry and Vicki about the personal stories behind the photographs, and plans to take the collection on a national tour with Carers NZ.

Family Choices

Deciding the time has come for residential care can be one of the hardest transitions experienced by family carers and their loved ones.  We spoke to two well known New Zealanders who faced this challenge with their ageing parents. 

Dame Kate Harcourt

Drawing on elements from the book and stage play, Flowers from My Mother's Garden, Dame Kate Harcourt talks about caring for her mother, how this affected her as a younger working Mum, and the lifelong insights she gained.   Kate now shares a Wellington property with her own extended family  and refers to this in her talk.  Caring is also a theme in her new film, Apron Strings .

Dame Fiona Kidman Dame Fiona Kidman

In the upcoming second volume of her memoir, due for release in late 2009, Fiona looks back on her years of caring for her mother.  She talks candidly to Family Care Radio about the rewards and challenges of this life-changing experience.  You can find the first volume of her memoir, At the End of Darwin Road , at libraries and bookshops nationally.   Beside the Dark Pool , will be available in late 2009.
